" SUPER TENT "

Hi Ted:

At K2 our living quarters were winterized tents. That is a wooden framework with a squad tent thrown over the top of the framework. Inside we had our cots and and two pot bellied stoves, fired by kerosene. I know I shouldn't bitch, but we froze our asses off when it got cold. If any ground pounders are reading this please forgive me for being such a candy ass, but you know how the Air force pampers their people.

I can remember laying in my rack with everything I owned piled over me and under me and still freezing! Anyhow, there were a couple of guys in the tent that got tired of this and went looking for something to insulate the tent with. They found a whole load of 1/2 or 3/4in thk, 4ft x 8ft plywood sheets in a storage area someplace on the base and "midnight requisitioned" a bunch of it. This was really nice stuff. I don't know where they got the tools but they went ahead and lined our tent with the plywood and did a beautiful job.

That was the classiest tent on the base, if not in all of Korea! How they did it and didn't get caught is beyond me. A couple of weeks after they finished really the winterizing the tent we were all moved to Quonset huts across the road. We moved some time in mid December '51. These were quite nice, but what a blow after all that work.

Don.
